The GI had been killed in combat. His body was brought back and delivered to his small town home in South Carolina. At the cemetery, a large gathering came together to honor the lad, with family, friends and sympathetic acquaintances. It was a sad occasion.
Finally the guard of honor fired the final salute and old Aunt Sadie, queen of the family, keeled over in a dead faint, just as the riflemen fired their salute. There was a moment of complete, shocked silence and then a small boy yelled so that his voice carried over the entire crowd, "Damn, they shot Grandma!"
